Please note that I’m using Procreate and drawing this digitally.

I talk more about how I got started with digital art here.

You can use any tool you want to make this drawing because the process is basically the same. You can use color pencils, pens or crayons – it’s completely your choice!

Let’s begin.

Step 1: Draw a rough sketch of the dog

We’re going to start with basic shapes so that it’s easy for us to trace over the rough sketch and draw the curly fur.

Let’s start with a big U shape – this is going to be the face.

Draw the dog's head with a U shape

Next, I’m going to draw another curve over the U shape and this is going to be the ears and the top of the head like this.

Next, draw the dog's ears

Next, we’re going to draw the dog’s body underneath like this:

Draw a rough sketch of the body underneath the head

And finally, to finish our rough sketch, we just have to draw 2 legs in front and the tail.

Remember to use very easy shapes like this since this is our rough sketch:

Next, draw the legs and tail

If you are drawing with a pencil, please make sure the lines are very light and you can erase them after you draw the final dog with curly hair.

And we’re done with the rough sketch, let’s draw the dog with curly hair now.

Step 2: Draw curly hair on the dog

Now, go over the lines slowly in a curly-wavy pattern so it looks like the dog has curly hair. Do it slowly and draw over 1 shape at a time.

I’m going to start with the head like this:

Start tracing the fur over the face of the dog

Then I’ll draw over the ears and the top of the head as well like this:

Add fur to the top of the head and the ears

Finally, I’ll move to the body. This is actually quite fun to draw, so take your time with this part.

Draw the curly fur on the dog's body

And finally, you can do the legs and the tail.

Remember to add some quick lines to the paws of the dog – this will showcase the legs perfectly.

Draw 2 small legs in the front

Lastly, I’ll add 2 small eyes and a nose to the dog to make it super cute.

I’ll extend the line underneath the nose to showcase it’s small furry face.

Draw eyes and a nose

And we’ve finished drawing the outline of the curly hair.

We can now start coloring the dog.

Step 3: Color the dog with curly hair

You can color your dog any color you want!

But for this tutorial, I’m going to go in with a cream-beige color like this.

Color your curly hair dog with a simple color

Next, I’ll color the muzzle a light cream and add 2 big blush spots to the dog’s cheeks right under the eyes.

Doesn’t our little fellow look super cute now?

Color the muzzle of the dog a different color and you can even add blush spots

Next, I’ll just go in with a darker color and add some shadows on the ears, underneath the head and behind the legs.

Add shadows to the curly hair dog and this is what you'll have.

Alright, and we’re done.

We’ve officially learned how to draw and color a dog with curly hair.
